Project to Explore Uses of Data Captured from Adaptive Educational Technologies

The National Academy of Education has received funding from the Pearson Foundation to examine the potential for increasing the use of data captured from adaptive educational technologies for education research. This project is organized around three questions:

1) What research opportunities are possible using these data?

2) What kinds of analyses have researchers conducted in the past using such data? And, what has been learned from such analyses?

3) What more is needed to develop research in this area?

a. What are the costs and benefits of using such data for research?

b. What kind of organizational supports would be needed from developers if data were used for research and program improvement?

c. What other accommodations might be needed for researchers (e.g., to ensure confidentiality of data, allow data to be processed statistically, etc.)?

Bringing together researchers, industry leaders, and research funders, the project steering committee convened a planning meeting on May 12, 2011 and a larger two-day summit on December 1-2, 2011.

The main product of this project will be the development of a white paper that addresses opportunities to promote effective use of this data across the K-12 and higher education fields. This will include the generation of specific research questions and goals to guide continued work towards making data from adaptive educational technologies more widely available for research and other applications. A background paper canvassing existing research was prepared for the Summit.
